Council to vote on Absa Run Your City Cape Town sponsorship

Council will this week deliberate on a proposal for the City of Cape Town to support the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10K race for the next three years. Last month, the Mayoral Committee endorsed the recommended three-year agreement with the race event. 

A positive outcome from Council could see the City's partnership with the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10K extended to 10 years.

The current proposal is for the City, through its Events Department, to provide support to the race organisers Stillwater Sports Management for the 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 financial years. 

The new sponsorship agreement would start with the road race's eighth edition scheduled for 14 May 2023.

'The Absa Run Your City, previously the FNB ONERun, has proven a mainstay annually since its inception in 2015 and has grown to be the third biggest race on the Western Cape race calendar. In its existence, the race has hosted more than 65 000 athletes and attracted some of the best African and international athletes to Cape Town. Its potential for growth is limitless.

'We believe granting a three-year agreement will provide the event organisers stability in planning for the next three years. As the City, we want to support the event as it aims to grow its participation  from just over 10 000 in 2022 to around 20 000 over the next three years. Growth for this event presents many opportunities for Cape Town including jobs, increased tourism into our city, destination marketing to the world and business for local suppliers,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Some of the race event's accomplishments in the last eight years include:

• Awarded a Silver Label status by World Athletics
• Awarded Gold Label status by World Athletics
• Hosted more than 65 000 local and international athletes
• Has grown into a five-city series including Durban, Johannesburg, Gqeberha and Tshwane
• Has helped raise over R300 000 for charities
• Has created approximately 4 000 job opportunities
• Introduced the single use plastic campaign as part of a greening and sustainability project
  
   
  
  The Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10K has established itself as a proudly South African, proudly Cape Town mass participation road running event that celebrates everything Cape Town - the vibe, the city and the people.
  
   
  
  It also has a route – from Milnerton to the CBD - that showcases the Mother City's most iconic landmark with the breath-taking view of Table Mountain as its backdrop.
  
   
  
  On Sunday, 14 May 2023, the event organisers are planning for more than 10 000 professional and recreational athletes to experience the beauty of the route.
